Feeling Drained?

Red Rock

Have you ever felt depleted? I have, especially during holidays. Today, I woke up drained mentally from processing all the activities of the week and preoccupation with all the tasks ahead. Maybe I needed a slower day to recover. It seems I expect more of myself than I can accomplish in the time I have. It is easy to fill each moment of the day with chores or things I consider necessary.

Zion National Park

Recently, my family traveled to Zion National Park, a park known for its huge red mountains. Our little rustic cabin lay nestled in a narrow valley, enveloped in majestic, rugged peaks. In all directions, we gazed up at the stark layers of rock in this high desert. My husband, son and I spent several days climbing the steep trails. During the hikes, I wondered what sustained the abundant plant and animal life in this dry, rocky fortress. I found a contrast between the vegetation in the valley and the rock formations engulfing the basin.

On our last day, we hiked a trail called Weeping Rock, not knowing what we would find. After stopping a few times to catch our breath, we observed water seeping out from a rock wall. Around the wet crag, verdant ferns and vibrant grasses grew. With closer examination, we witnessed a spring bubbling out clear, cold water. We stood in awe of this seemingly impossible water source that brought life to the desert.

While on the way home, I reflected on the water escaping through the side of the mountain. The spring reminded me of what Jesus said, “Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them”. God gives life in the middle of our parched places. We can feel drained and exhausted with no inner resources, but God provides living water to quench our thirst and renew us. No matter our stress, no matter our circumstances or even our weaknesses, God gives refreshing life from the Holy Spirit.

Today, I slowed my pace, took time to do something I enjoyed, prayed, and listened to music. Slowing down enabled God to replenish me.

Linger at what brings joy. Allow space in your day to listen to God’s voice and to sense the sweet presence of the One who loves you.

Dear life-giving God, I am weary and overwhelmed. Come and bring renewing hope to me amid my hectic day. Renew, restore, refresh. Thank you for your limitless living water.

Amen

Grace offers hope,

Charleen
